About The Awards |
| The awards possible during our courses are briefly outlined below, it is by no means a full description but it should be sufficient to give a feel for the awards |
South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme –
Summer Walking Leader Award |
The South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme of training and assessment had been approved under the MLTB Local Accreditation System (1997).
The award covers the Mountain and Moorland areas of the South West and the Brecon Beacons – excluding exposed ridges, gullies and steep ground.
The award is used extensively within the South West by local authorities, voluntary organisations, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, schools, colleges and establishments of further and higher education, as a means of ensuring that staff leading groups are competent
The syllabus content covers such things as:- Leadership, Planning, Group Management, Organisation and Responsibilities, Weather, Equipment, Navigation, Navigation Skills, Incident Procedures, Access and the Conservation of the Environment, Personal preparation, Personal walking skills.
Successful completion of assessment enables approval to be given for the leadership of Moorland Day Walks in Summer Conditions in the South West Mountain and Moorland areas |

South West Mountain and Moorland Leader Training Scheme –
Summer Camping Leader Award |
The Camping Leader award builds on the skills and experience gained during the Walking Leader Award. The syllabus content covers such things as :- Leadership, Planning, Group Management, Organisation and Responsibilities, Equipment and its Usage, General Navigation, Night Navigation, Incident Procedures, Access and the Conservation of the Environment, Remote Supervision, Campsite selection and safety.
Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the leadership of Moorland Walking Expeditions and Camping in Summer Conditions (inc. ‘Wild’ Camping). |

Mountain Leader Training England – Mountain Leader (Summer) Award Training |
The mountains of the UK are remote, technical and exposed to harsh and unpredictable weather. This makes them a hazardous place for novice walkers and the Mountain Leader Award is designed to help responsible leaders who wish to operate in mountainous terrain in summer conditions. Mountain Leader courses develop your group management skills, the ability to navigate in all conditions, the ability to deal with mountain hazards (including steep ground) and increase your awareness of environmental issues. There is an expedition element to the scheme.
At the end of this training course you will have a personal action plan that will guide you through the consolidation phase of the scheme (usually a period of at least twelve months) before your assessment. |

Mountain Leader Training England – Single Pitch Award Training |
This award enables holders to supervise people on single pitch crags and climbing walls. To gain this award you need more than just good personal climbing skills. The course will teach you about safe group management, indoors and out, crag etiquette, environmental responsibilities and more. You will Learn to become an effective supervisor, encouraging others to enjoy their climbing safely, whilst also improving some of your own climbing skills.
At the end of this training course you will have a personal action plan that will guide you through the consolidation phase of the scheme (usually a period of at least six months) before your assessment
Assessment opportunities will be available for course participants with sufficient previous experience to meet the assessment requirements. |

Mountain Bike Instructor Award Scheme – Level 2 |
The purpose of the Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme is to promote the safe enjoyment of mountain biking in an off-road environment.
The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in a variety of off-road environments in the UK other than in winter conditions. It introduces training, experience and assessment in a variety of testing conditions in off-road country.
The scheme is recognised throughout the UK and by AALA.
Successful completion of assessment enables approval for the leadership of mountain biking in Country Parks, Canal Towpaths and low level rides on recognised bridleways below 599 metres in wilderness terrain. |

Mountain Medicine – First Aid for the Outdoors Courses |
Mountain Medicine has been registered with the Health & Safety Executive in the UK (Reg. No. 991/91) since 1991 as an approved provider of First Aid at Work training and examination.
Mountain Medicine operates a wide range of "occupational first aid" and more specialist courses throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Our courses are recognised by the Health & Safety Executive, covering all aspects of the HSE First Aid at Work (or appointed persons) with additional elements which are appropriate to the mountain and outdoor environment.
These are practically based courses designed to meet the needs of those who teach or lead groups in the outdoors. |

British Canoe Union – Open Canoe Coach Level 1 & 2 |
The BCU Canoe Coach awards range from Level 1 to Level 5. Level 1 and 2 Coaches operate on sheltered water sites and work particularly with novices (level 1) and on developing basic skills (level 2). Pre-requisites for the award include first aid, BCU Safety Test and 2 star (Level 1) or 3 star (Level 2).
Our training courses do provide you with the training and skills to enable you to attain all the relevant pre-requisites for the Level 1 and 2 Coach Training
The course content includes personal skills at the required level, safety and rescues, group management in water venues suitable to the level of award, leader equipment, weather, access and environment, dealing with emergencies and for level 2, leading simple journeys. |

British Canoe Union – Kayak Coach Level 1 & 2 |
The BCU Kayak Coach awards follow a similar pattern to those of the canoe coach.
Pre-requisites for the award include first aid, BCU Safety test and 2 star Kayak (Level 1) or 3 star Kayak (Level 2). You will work towards these awards during the course.
Level 1 & 2 coaches operate on sheltered waters and are largely responsible for introducing novices to Kayaking.
The course will take you through the star awards and safety test then onto the coach award itself which will cover a similar syllabus to the Canoe award – i.e. leader equipment, weather, access and environment, dealing with emergencies and for level 2, leading simple journeys. |

RYA – Powerboat Level 2 Award |
This award follows the syllabus of the RYA –
during the course you will receive training and personal skills to enable you to successfully complete this award.
NB This 2 day course is available as a bolt-on extra for an additional fee of £175 |

Snorkelling Instructor Award |
Introduction to, and introducing equipment/ equipment care.
Safe snorkelling guidelines and theory. Teaching practices both in pool and in sheltered open water.
The course will involve two half-days theory, one half day in a local swimming pool and , one half day in open water. |

Cornwall County Council Locally Approved Awards |
Cornwall County Council Locally Approved awards enable you to run activities at any of the Cornwall Outdoors Centres and Cornwall Local Authority establishments.
The awards will provide you with training based on the syllabuses recommended by the relevant national bodies for the sports.
Although these are local awards, they should be accepted as prove of competence or training by most potential employers.
